Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage is a highly therapeutic form of bodywork that focuses on treating specific musculoskeletal issues and chronic pain. Unlike the gentler, relaxation-focused Swedish massage, this technique is designed to target the deeper layers of muscle tissue, tendons, and fascia. The primary goal is to break down painful “knots” in the muscles taht form from injury, poor posture, or chronic tension. The lower layers are accessed by slow strokes and sustained, intense pressure from fingers, knuckles, elbows, or forearms. While the treatment may cause temporary discomfort, it is an effective way to release deep chronic patterns of tension. The overall outcome is significant releif from pain, improved range of motion, and restored muscle tension. Due to its targeted and intense nature, deep tissue massage is best suited for individuals dealing with specific issues like stiff necks, lower back pain, or recovering from sports injury.
Techniques unique to Deep Tissue Massage
Stripping: long, slow, deep, gliding strokes along the entire length of the muscle fibers from the origin (beginning) to the insertion (end) of the muscle, elongating shortened muscles and improvomg blood flow and lymph drainage along the muscle line
Cross-fiber friction: precise, short, non-gliding stroes where the fingers or thumb move perpendicular the direction of the muscle, tendon, or ligament fibers breaking down scar tissue and “knots” and preventing the formation of new scar tissue.
Trigger point therapy- applying sustained, focused pressure to highly sensitive tender spots that often cause referred pain in other areas of the body.
Therapeutic Benefits
Alleviates chronic pain
Breaks down scar tissue and prevents formation of new scar tissue
Increases range of motion and flexibility
Aids in injury recovery by reducing inflammation in the damaged areas
Improves posture
Boosts circulation
Reduces stress and anxiety
Encourages proper realignment of healing tissue fibers to restore mobility
